At SKIIM we implement procedures to make sure our products are high quality ensuring their longevity. As a brand we work to combat the throw away culture of fashion with a more thoughtful, sustainable approach to garment making, never compromising the final product. Leather is a natural material, and the leather we use is a by-product of the meat industry and is sourced from sustainable suppliers who adhere to globally recognised social and environmental standards. With this approach, SKIIM takes otherwise wasteful material, and turns it into a valuable asset. The latter procures jobs for rural communities who often rely on the leather industry to make a living. This has a snowball effect as these added jobs evolve into work with a focus on specialist craftsmanship, providing employment and opportunity for many. This allows SKIIM to contribute to a hand-worker economy, to increase global workforce inclusivity, improve women’s wellbeing beyond factories and preserve important cultural traditions around the world.
SKIIM works towards supply chain transparency, fair trade and zero/minimal waste ethos. Each component that goes into making a SKIIM product is individually sourced by us from the finest tanneries and factories in the world. We utilise a family-run factory based in Portugal with skilled craftsmen and women, this provides a fair and safe working environment within a high quality factory where the emphasis is on precision and craftsmanship. With full control of our supply chain we are able to ensure the quality meets our standards. The smaller runs in the production process means we are being less excessive in wastage and less impactful on the environment. We give the details on all our SKIIM product stating where it is made and with which leather it has been sourced from and its provenance stated on care labels and our e-store’s product page. SKIIM is continuously searching for innovative ways to further reduce our impact, and partners with suppliers who are exemplary in their approach to social and environmental wellbeing. Our signature leathers are carefully chosen for their sustainable production as part of our core "Classiques" Collection (our classic styles that are available year round). This collection includes Italian vegetable-tanned sheepskin and the finest quality lamb plongès from Turkey which are metal free. For the seasonal collections we employ two main tanning processes: vegetable tanning and synthetic tanning. Vegetable tanning uses all-natural substances found in trees and plants, making it an environment-friendly process. The quality of vegetable tanned leathers is extremely durable, ages beautifully with time, and lasts a lifetime. Synthetic tanning is a combination type process (using either Vegetable or Chrome tanning). This process is a more environmentally sound alternative to solely chrome tanning, and consumes less water and energy in general. We ensure that both these methods are sustainable when utilizing the correct set up with our suppliers.
Made with love, leather is a material that lasts a lifetime. Our products can be passed through generations, cared for, repaired, restored and recycled, making way for a more sustainable wardrobe. By designing with integrity and with the future in mind, SKIIM is committed to creating modern fashion that has longevity and durability at the forefront rather than creating short lived disposable fashion.
